k, time for the earlier-promised life update.
i left for beijing on august 20th, arriving august 21st china time because of the time difference. i was able to catch some tail-end olympics action, including lots of track & field and a volleyball semifinal match. it's a pity i arrived too late for tennis, and that the men's basketball final was so expensive, but c'est la vie. anyway, here are some highlights of the stuff i did watch:
- Cold War volleyball match-up that turned into a real nail-biter (capitalism wins!). i made good use of the U.S. flag i bought right before the match.
- sneaking into the athletes' seating section for my first event. i was wearing blue, so i was prepared to claim i was a ping pong player for ukraine. the guy i was with was wearing a 'T' on his shirt, so he was going to be from turkey.
- bryan clay, the american decathlete i was cheering for, won the men's decathlon, though he ran out of gas on the 1500m and wasn't able to set an olympic record for points
- australian pole vaulter steve hooker set a new olympic record in dramatic fashion: 4 times clearing the bar on his final attempt
- the russian women won the 4x100m (track) relay, and my russian companion handed them his russian flag for their victory lap
- the americans swept the podium in the men's 400m, with the bronze medal winner Superman-ing it at the finish to get his chest across the line .04 seconds before the 4th place guy. what an effort!
in other stuff, i spent all olympics searching for the France warm-up jacket, since i thought it looked really slick, only to learn on my final day in beijing that there were only 2008 made, and that i wouldn't really be able to buy it anywhere now. then in more pwnage, i found two good Deutschland shirts to buy as presents for friends, but with only one coming in an appropriate size. someone has to miss out, and i already know who it will be based on fashion taste.
i am currently in chicago visiting my sister. i will be back in california september 3rd. anyone still gonna be in the bay area?
